The narrow slice of cannabis we write about

Most cannabis publishing is about cultivation, brands, or policy. This one is about a single stage of the business: post-harvest, the window between chopping the plant and packaging sellable flower.

Post-harvest is where the largest block of facility labor sits, where quality gets protected or quietly destroyed, and where a few points of recovery rate are worth more than most capital projects on the cultivation side. It typically represents 6 to 30 percent of total production cost, and almost nobody measures it properly.

Everything here is written for people running or funding facilities at commercial volume, not for home growers. The numbers assume large, well-grown indoor flower and North American or European labor rates.

Every stage between the chop and the package

Drying

Where the most yield is lost and the fewest people are looking. Over-drying costs saleable weight directly and makes every downstream machine harsher on the flower. Water activity is the control variable, not moisture content. We cover 60/60 drying, snap dry, and why funk shows up above 0.60 aw in dense flower.

Bucking

Bucking removes flower from the stalk. Done by hand it is slow; done by machine on flower-grade material it converts A's into B's. Bucking machines belong on pre-roll and fresh frozen streams, not on anything headed for the flower shelf.

Trimming

Trimming is where operators trade labor for yield, and where most automation purchases go wrong. We cover dwell time, feed rate, tumbling versus brush-belt architectures, tight trimming, the skim and re-pass method, and the potency myth.

Sorting and grading

Sorting and grading is the stage most facilities treat as an afterthought and the one with the clearest automation case. Stream separation and intelligent trimming are where machine vision is actually changing the cost structure.

Curing

Curing buys aroma, texture, and shelf life, and homogenizes moisture across a lot.

QC and packaging

The last chance to catch scarring, trichome degradation, and grade drift before product reaches a buyer.

The numbers we hold everything against

  • Post-harvest labor cost per pound: $20 to $35 hand, under $25 automated. Above $55 per pound signals a problem.
  • A/B-grade flower recovery: 75 to 82 percent. Below 70 percent, yield loss outruns any labor saving.
  • Scarring: under 2 percent. Driven by over-dried input and excess dwell time.
  • Water activity at package: 0.55 to 0.60 aw. Above 0.60 aw dense flower develops funk.

What we argue, plainly

  • Yield is the most overlooked metric in cannabis production. Sellable flower is worth ten to twenty times trim.
  • Once yield degradation passes 10 percent, no realistic labor reduction offsets the loss.
  • Automation is only half the result. The process built around the machine is the other half.
  • Quality is protected in post-harvest, never created.
  • The claim that machine trimming costs potency does not survive contact with lab data.

What is cannabis post-harvest?
Post-harvest is every step between cutting the plant down and packaging sellable flower: drying, bucking, trimming, sorting and grading, curing, and QC. It typically accounts for 6 to 30 percent of total production cost.
What is a good post-harvest recovery rate?
For well-grown, defoliated indoor flower, 75 to 82 percent A/B-grade recovery is the benchmark range. Around 80 percent is the gold standard for hand-trimmed flower.
What should post-harvest labor cost per pound be?
Hand processing at roughly $35 per pound is a strong target. Above $55 per pound there is nearly always room to improve. With automation and a working process, under $25 per pound.
Does automated trimming reduce potency?
Testing across many operators has not supported that claim. Lab variation commonly swings plus or minus 1 to 2 percent, wider than any difference typically observed between machine-trimmed and hand-trimmed flower.
