Automation potency myth

The automation potency myth is the widespread claim that machine-trimmed flower tests lower in cannabinoids than hand-trimmed flower. In controlled side-by-side lab testing across many operators and cultivars, the difference has not shown up in a way that exceeds normal analytical variance, which typically swings ±1–2% between duplicate samples of the same lot.

Why it matters

This belief drives real capital decisions: operators staff up hand-trim crews, reject automation projects, and accept $30–$50/lb labor costs to protect a potency number the lab cannot actually distinguish from noise.

Sample variation on the same lot commonly swings ±1–2% THC, larger than any hand-vs-machine delta anyone has measured. Over-trimmed, rock-polished flower often tests slightly higher than needle-poked hand trim. Run a controlled split at your facility with a local lab, same day, same lab, and the debate settles quickly.
